Every once in awhile, I get to tag along when my handsome husband Tom goes on a work related trip. He had a meeting at the Murad headquarters in Los Angeles this week, so we cashed in some frequent flyer miles and made a short 3-day vacation out of it. Of course if you know my husband, he is a strategizer, so while we were in Cali, he set up a few other business meetings. We got to play a little and Tom got to do a little business. It was a perfect couple days in a gorgeous climate. I hope you enjoy the pictures I snapped on our little get away. California is gorgeous and we most definitely had fun in the sun.
I flew into Los Angeles early Wednesday evening and Tom picked me up at the airport in a red Camaro. Of course, my first thoughts were, Brodrick is going to be so jealous. We headed straight to our hotel in Calabasas, as we had over an hour’s drive ahead of us. We took the scenic route through the Topanga Canyon on the world’s most curviest road. The view was amazing, and truth be told, I was a little surprised I didn’t get car sick. I tried to capture the enormousness of the mountains as we drove through Topanga, but the sun was setting and somehow capturing this on camera, in a moving car, was elusive. We arrived at our hotel, ate dinner and then hit the hay.
Thursday morning we got up and found a gym to hit the weights. Stopped at Trader Joe’s on the way back to our hotel to stock our mini-fridge, ate a quick breakfast and then got ready for our day. We had plans to head to Malibu, which once again took us on a winding drive through the mountains, only this time the sun was shining. There are places along the way you can pull off to take in the view and we did just that. Amazing!
Tom had arranged to meet with Mark Sisson while on this trip. The two of them have been in cahoots for awhile and as long as we were going to be in California, they planned to informally discuss business. Mark invited us to his home in Malibu and then took us out to lunch at a cool restaurant right on the water. If you are a Mark Sisson fan, you will recognize the daybed in the photo collage. The view driving into Malibu is of course gorgeous and along the way we drove past Pepperdine University. Both Tom and I thought we might try to talk Brodrick into rethinking his college options. We dream big dreams!
Late afternoon, after stopping for an iced tea, we headed to the pier in Malibu. We wanted to get our feet wet and feel the sand in between our toes. We strolled up and down, fascinated by the birds dive bombing the water to catch fish and then watched the surfers catch some wave. Our stomachs stayed on central standard time this trip, so an early dinner at a barbecue restaurant suggested by Mark was had, and then back to the hotel. We were operating on a two hour time difference, which meant we were waking up really early and ready for bed the same.
Both Tom and I wanted to go hiking while in California and our hotel concierge recommended the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Parkland. For the M*A*S*H fans, this was the location where the scenes were shot. It was about 10 minutes from our hotel, so, Friday morning started with a 7am hike. We didn’t go far in distance, but it was a long way up the hill. The sun was barely rising as we approached the mountains, but rose as we were heading up. If you look real closely in the picture on the right, you can see the “speck” that is Tom. That gives you an idea of how big these hills were. If only we lived closer, I could see myself doing this daily, I loved it!
Post hike we had leftovers for breakfast and the remainders of our few groceries we picked up at Trader Joe’s. We checked out of our hotel and headed to LA. The fine people at Murad had offered us a mini-spa day, complete with a glass of champagne. Both Tom and I had a massage and a facial and it was glorious! We got glowing reports on the health of our skin, which is more a result of our nutrition than anything we put on it. My beauty routine is quite simple, I wash my face with Dr. Bronner’s bar soap and use an organic chemical free moisturizer. I think the esthetician was more than a little surprised when I told her this, especially when I told her there was no SPF added. She was very polite and encouraged me to keep doing what I am doing, as it’s apparently working. We grabbed a quick salad at a local deli and then headed downtown LA, time for a little work before dinner.
The rest of the day on Friday was spent with Jim Lavalle. Tom and Jim had LTF business to discuss and then he and I met to talk about an opportunity for me, that involves working for him. Which is amazing and unbelievable all at the same time. For those that don’t know who Jim is, he is the founder of the LaValle Metabolic Clinic, author of The Metabolic Code and one of the world’s top experts in metabolic medicine. Jim is responsible for restoring my own health from the effects of adrenal fatigue, for which I am extremely grateful. We then hooked up with a few friends from H2 Wellness, a health technology company, and the five of us headed out to dinner at a trendy restaurant in West Hollywood. It was the perfect end to our trip. With the help of an aspiring stand-up comic as our server, we laughed and laughed and laughed while enjoying a delicious meal.
